Cascara Sagrada – Whole - Rhamnus purshiana

Cascara sagrada (Frangula purshiana) is a deciduous shrub native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. Also known as “sacred bark,” this botanical has a long history of traditional use among Indigenous communities and in Western herbal practices.

Our Cascara Sagrada – Whole consists of dried bark that has been properly aged before use. Traditionally, the bark has been prepared as a tea or processed into an extract. Because naturally occurring constituents in fresh cascara can be harsh, properly aged bark is essential for traditional preparations.

Cascara sagrada has traditionally been valued for its digestive and bowel-supporting properties. Its distinctly bitter character has also made it an ingredient in certain traditional herbal formulations.

Traditional Uses

Cascara Sagrada – Whole may be prepared as:

  • Traditional herbal tea
  • Botanical infusions
  • Herbal extracts
  • Traditional digestive formulations

The bark belongs to the Rhamnaceae family and is naturally found in moist woodland environments across parts of the northwestern United States and western Canada.

Precautions

Cascara sagrada should be used only as directed and under appropriate professional guidance. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Avoid use if you have intestinal obstruction, unexplained abdominal pain, or inflammatory intestinal conditions. Do not use for longer than 8 days unless supervised by a qualified healthcare professional. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you take medications or have an existing health condition.
