Wild Yam Root – Powder - Dioscorea villosa

Wild Yam is a perennial climbing vine native to eastern North America. Scientifically known as Dioscorea villosa, it belongs to the Dioscoreaceae family and is recognized by its twining growth habit, heart-shaped leaves, and underground tuberous rhizomes. The plant naturally favors damp, sandy soils along woodland edges, thickets, and other partially shaded environments.

Wild Yam has a long history of traditional use in North American Indigenous herbal practices as well as in Traditional Chinese Medicine. European settlers later incorporated the root into American folk herbal traditions. The underground portions of the plant have traditionally been valued for their inclusion in various botanical preparations.

The root naturally contains steroidal saponins, including diosgenin. Although diosgenin can be used as a starting material in laboratory processes for producing certain steroid compounds, Wild Yam itself does not contain progesterone, and the human body does not convert diosgenin directly into progesterone.

Our Wild Yam Root Powder is prepared from wild-harvested root and finely ground for convenient use in traditional herbal preparations.

Suggested Uses

Wild Yam root powder can be incorporated into:

  • Traditional herbal decoctions
  • Liquid extracts
