Symptoms Due to Pitta Imbalance

Symptoms Due to Pitta Imbalance

"When the pitta dosha becomes imbalanced, there is an increase in the influence of the fire and water elements. This, of course, leads to an increase in their qualities within the body and mind. Of the two elements, fire is predominant.

As heat builds up in the digestive system, the first symptoms to develop are often mild burning, or frequent and loose stools. Gas may also form but pitta gas differs from vata gas as it has a sharp, foul odor. As the imbalance spreads to the circulatory system, the body becomes warmer and some of the tissues of the body experience mild burning sensations. This is common in the eyes but also may present as burning urination, burning inside the nostrils and burning of the rectum during bowel movements. As a person becomes warmer, they become uncomfortable in hot weather and seek out cool or air-conditioned places. All of these are mild symptoms until the condition settles into a weakened area. There, the symptoms become worse. Any of the symptoms noted thus far can become much worse if the dosha settles into that location.

Two of the most common advanced symptoms of pitta imbalance are inflammation and infection. This occurs in any tissue that the pitta dosha settles in. Inflammation is common in the muscles, tendons and ligaments and results in joint and body aches and pains. Infections anywhere in the body, especially when accompanied by a fever, are due to an imbalance in pitta. Examples include urinary system infections and hepatitis. If pitta settles into the skin, a person develops angry red rashes, such as hives or acne, and ulcerations may appear on the skin or lips, as occurs in herpes simplex infections. If the dosha settles into the nervous system there may be burning nerve sensations going down an arm, a leg or the side of the face. In the reproductive system, the heat can damage the eggs or the sperm. Menstrual bleeding tends to increase in intensity." - From my book: Healing Your Life- Lessons on the Path of Ayurveda. This book, published by Lotus Press was written for the general public.

Four Tips to Balance Pitta Dosha

  1. Rest: Rest is cooling and support releasing the heat that has built up.
  2. Avoid Spicy Foods: Hot spices aggravate pitta dosha and increase inflammation.
  3. Use a Cooling Spray Mist: Mist your face with a combination of rose water and sandalwood essential oil. Use a rose hydrosol available in health food stores and add a few drops of Sandalwood essential oil.
